Ibanez Axe Design Lab RGDMS8 Multi-Scale 8-String Electric Guitar - Classic Silver Matte
The Ibanez RGDMS8 is a multi-scale 8-string from the Axe Design Lab series. Multi-scale — or fanned-fret — construction gives each string its own optimal length, with the low strings running longer for tension and clarity while the treble strings stay shorter for comfortable bending and a warmer top end. On an 8-string reaching down to F#, that difference is not cosmetic: it is what keeps the lowest string from sounding loose and undefined.
Why Multi-Scale Matters on an 8-String
A single scale length is always a compromise on extended-range instruments. Long enough for a tight low F# and the high strings become stiff and hard to bend; short enough for comfortable leads and the low string turns to mush. The fanned-fret layout resolves that by treating each string on its own terms. The angled frets look unusual at first, but the geometry actually follows the natural angle of the fretting hand across the neck, and most players adapt within a session or two.
Tonewoods and Electronics
The nyatoh body provides a rich mid-low end that supports the extended low range without becoming muddy. The Wizard III neck is a five-piece maple and walnut lamination — thin, flat, and fast, with the stability that an eight-string neck requires. The Macassar ebony fretboard delivers tight lows and strong high-end attack with quick response and rich sustain, and carries white step off-set dot inlays. Fishman Fluence Modern humbuckers — Alnico in one position, Ceramic in the other — provide aggressive high-gain performance with multiple voicings and none of the noise associated with traditional active pickups.
