Ibanez M80M Meshuggah Signature 8-String Electric Guitar - Weathered Black
Meshuggah did more than adopt the 8-string guitar — they made a case for what it was actually for. The M80M is the signature model built from that history, and its most telling feature is what it leaves out: a single bridge humbucker, one volume control, and nothing else in the signal path. This is an instrument designed around a specific and uncompromising approach to rhythm playing.
Single Pickup, Single Purpose
The lone bridge humbucker is not a cost decision. Removing the neck pickup eliminates a magnetic load on the strings and clears the area under the strings where the player's hand sits during palm-muted rhythm work. The result is a more direct, focused output with tighter transient response — exactly what precision rhythm playing at extended range demands. Players looking for a versatile do-everything instrument should look elsewhere; players who know what they want from an 8-string will recognize the logic immediately.
Construction
The ash body delivers a bright, well-defined character with strong note separation — important on an 8-string where low-string content can easily overwhelm everything above it. The five-piece maple and walnut neck provides the rigidity required to keep eight strings' worth of tension stable, and the rosewood fretboard adds a balanced midrange that keeps the sound from becoming brittle. The Weathered Black finish is a satin treatment that resists fingerprints and gives the instrument a worn, utilitarian appearance in keeping with the band's aesthetic.
